  25. About the Installer:

  27. This 15$-shareware-installer creates a minimal System disk by deleting some resources from your System, Finder, System 7 Tuneup, and CapsLock files.

  29. It´s the first official release. Anything seems to work fine and currently there are no known bugs.

  32. You cannot install on your active system!
  33. 7.1 is not supported, but will follow if available.
  34. Currently I´m using the System 7 folder manager, so if you start it from a System 6 disk, enexpected results will occur. I haven´t tested it yet.

  36. You can 'Easy Install' this script and any unused resources will be deleted. If you select customize, you can select the following options:

  38. • System 7 Tuner and CapsLock: delete the icons and bundle-resources. Now these items have generic icons.
  39.  
  40. • About the Finder-Dialog: deletes the resources for this dialog 
  41. (select option-'About this Macintosh')
  42.  
  43. • Compress strings: Some long strings will be replaced by shorter ones
  44.  
  45. • Finder color icons: Removes the color icons
  46.  
  47. • animated cursor:
  48. - removed the animated 'wrist watch'-cursor
  49. - compresses the animation when calling "Find.." in the Finder.
  50.  
  51. •    System fonts: Chicago, Geneva, and Monaco are deleted, because they are also in the ROMs. Installer 3.3 required.

  53. • System icons: some usually unused icons, dialog and window colors are deleted

  55. • System pattern: some pattern are deleted, so you can´t customize your background pattern.

  57. • System packages: Transcendental Functions, AppleEvents, PPc, Edition Manager, Color Picker, DAL, Picture Utilities, Printer-Driver, Backlight-Driver, SoundInput

  61. • System Sound: Items required for sound cdev sound sampling feature and CD Remote. Some sounds and the sound synthesizer are deleted.

  63. • About keyboards: the dialog is deleted and the resources needed by the KeyCaps-DA

  65. • AppleTalk: LocalTalk, EtherTalk and printing capabilities are deleted

  74. There is another file called 'deleted resources'with a description, which resources will be deleted by the particular installer packages.

  78. How to create a minimal system disk:

  81. 1) Install a minimal System 7.0 or better 7.0.1 system disk. (7.0 was not tested the last weeks, sorry). It´s faster to install the system on a hard disk, because a lot of file accesses are required. But you can also copy the utilities disk and remove the hard disk formatting utility. Or try to install this software on a MountImage 1.2b1-Image.
  82. Install System 7 Tuneup (1.1.1).
  83. Delete any unneeded Files like the Control-Panel-Alias in the Apple-Menu.

  85. 2) Get an Apple Installer. The installer 3.2 is the standard system 7 installer on your 'Install 1'-Disk. If you want to delete the fonts, you have to use the Installer 3.3. You can find it on the Developer CD (March ´92 and later).

  87. 3) Copy this installer in my folder 'Min-System-Installer Disk' and don´t change the folder name!

  89. 4) Start the installation. Be careful to choose the right floppy/hard disk!
  90.  
  91. 5) Test it on your machines. (Test your 'First Aid'-Disk before you need it; if this disk doesn´t work and you must use it, it´s too late...).

  93. 6) If this installation doesn´t work, you have to re-install the whole system because the resources are deleted (but we wanted to do it).

  95. 7) Please report any errors, suggestion and anything you like or dislike.

  97. 8) If you patch this installer, the best resources you can use are the 'FPac'- and 'FPad'-resource. (FP are my initials, and the resources are enumerated aa,ab,ac,ad,..). Only add some resources to existing packages.
  98. 'FPac': these resources are deleted
  99. 'FPad': these resources are replaced if they are in the original system.
  100. Currently only used for some strings. I have changed the resource Type for special countries, so any US-'STR ' will be in the ' USA'-resource. The resource IDs are unchanged, but this is only for better readability.
